Lion Deer - WIP? by Imbecamiel Lion Deer - WIP? by Imbecamiel
I've just returned from vacation - while it was fun, I'm looking forward to finally settling back down to work, on art as well as other things. This summer has been so scattered and crazy.

I've got sooo many half-finished paintings begging to be worked on right now - including a number of things that others have requested. But naturally when I got a bit of breathing space and time to work last night my brain decided that it wanted to do something TOTALLY DIFFERENT. XD

This was the result. I've been wanting to play around with a simpler style, kind of old-fashioned or reminiscent of watercolors, for some of my illustrations. I'm not sure how well it worked here, and I'll likely wind up refining this a lot more. Still, I'm rather fond of this pair, even though it's from an older sketch.

Crits and suggestions - particularly as regards the coloring style - would be much appreciated!

They're fascinating looking creatures. They look like something that would be right at home in a Japanese legend, or perhaps a Miyazaki film. Of course that could just be the fact that the Japanese like deer in their symbolism influencing my thoughts.

Thank you! I've thought before that I really should read up on more of the Japanese mythology... My knowledge there is pretty scattered and sketchy, but it might make some of my ideas much more well-rounded not to think so strongly in terms of Western legends. ^^

I lived in Japan for part of a summer when I was a teenager as part of a school exchange program, and we visited a number of temples while I was there. Deer were a very common motif tied to Buddha legends, and many of the temples had large herds of deer on the grounds. There are a lot of legends in Japan related to nature and wildlife, and the spirits that inhabit it all, that can provide fascinating inspiration for modern storytelling.

Interesting! I hadn't realized that deer were so heavily involved in their legends.

As I recall deer are considered messengers to/from the gods in Shinto, and Buddha was said to have ridden a deer in some of their Buddhist legends, and the majority of people who practice the Shinto beliefs also follow Buddhist teachings.

I adore these. Maned deer!! It's such a cool--and surprisingly natural-looking--combination of features. And I like the coloring style a lot. Simple and clean. <3

Yay, thank you! I'm glad you like them! :) I was really surprised by how they came out, really, because normally deer, and antlers generally, just... do not work well for me. *g*

Anyhow - *bounces*
